When Apollos wanted to go to Achaia, the brothers and sisters encouraged him and wrote to the disciples there to welcome him. When he arrived, he was a great help to those who by grace had believed. Acts 18:27 (NIV)
When I reflect on my career, I see clearly that everything I've been able to achieve is due to God's blessings. One of the many ways He has blessed me is through the people I've met along the way, those who have referred me to various careers. God has connected me with people who helped propel me into opportunities that I could never have reached on my own. In corporate America, it's often true that you have a much greater chance of landing a job through an internal referral than any other method.
LinkedIn has created a platform that makes career networking simple. Colleagues who know your skills can vouch for you and positively influence your job search and career growth. I've had the chance to endorse others, and others have endorsed me, all because of the mutual connections we've formed and the trust built through these relationships.
When I consider Acts 18:27, I think of Apollos, who wanted to go to Achaia to spread the Gospel. He was able to do so because a network of believers vouched for him. They wrote letters to the disciples in Achaia, asking them to welcome him. Imagine how much easier his journey must have been, knowing the disciples there were already expecting him to come, based on a recommendation.
The takeaway here is to live with integrity and to remain open to learning and growth. This applies not only to our spiritual lives but also to our personal lives and careers. A few verses prior, in Acts 18:24-26, we see that Apollos was a scholar who already had knowledge of the Scriptures. He was further mentored by Priscilla and Aquila, who helped deepen his understanding of God's ways.
We should embrace opportunities to grow through mentorship. God will place people in our lives who will help us grow, and, in time, He will send us out to fulfill the work He has for us.
