Refuge
Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge. Psalm 62:8 (NIV)
On December 9th, the daily takeaway was about God being our refuge. I wanted to expand on this topic to give it more attention. The takeaway stated, “Throughout the Bible, God is described as a refuge, a fortress, and a strong tower. This is because He provides protection from all the attacks surrounding us. Many of these attacks we never even see because He shields us from them before they can ever reach us.”
How often do we pour out our hearts to God? Maybe often, or maybe not as often as we should. However, there is no consequence to coming to God with our troubles or burdens. As a matter of fact, that is how we show God that we trust Him. That trust is what opens the door for God to be our refuge.
Here are a few examples of what “refuge” means. It is the place we can run to and hide. The place where we can seek protection. The place where we can be shielded from the crazy world surrounding us and still have peace. It is a place where we have protection physically, spiritually, and emotionally.
Psalm 18:10 says, “The name of the LORD is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.” I call your attention to the word run, because often when people seek refuge, they are running from something to something better. How does this apply? We should run from what might spiritually harm us and run to God, our fortified tower, who will protect us.
The greatness of God means He has no limits. Organizations that provide refuge are limited by funding, manpower, or any number of legal restrictions. God being our refuge has no limits. God created an entire universe by speaking it into existence, so there is no problem too hard, no burden too heavy, and no legal system that can stop God from being our refuge.
Heavenly Father, our strong tower, our refuge, we seek You with our entire hearts. We thank You for being our place of refuge and safety. May we cast off anything that does not produce the results You want for us, and let us run to You and You only. We run to You for protection, and may Your protection and peace surround us each and every day. Forgive our sins, so that we may live in righteousness. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
