But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! Galatians 5:22-23 (NLT)
This devotional is for everyone, but it does lean toward the technical. I can promise you it doesn't contain spacing and capitalization errors in the verse above. Grammatically it is incorrect, but syntactically it is correct. This may not make a lot of sense to you if you don't understand SQL, so I'll explain it in a way that makes sense to everyone. IYKYK.
If you are wondering why I'm using SQL syntax for this devotional, well, it's simple. I want to share this devotional with people who are in software and data careers. I feel like in this profession we have a lot of people who might not typically pick up and read the Bible, but they might be intrigued enough to read this techvotional. Yes, I just made up a lame new word. Keep in mind I'm that guy who owns a shirt that says, "I keep all my dad jokes in a dad-a-base."
Now that I have that introduction out of the way, let's jump into it. If you know nothing about SQL, let me break this image down for you. The capitalized SELECT with the asterisk grabs all the columns from a table, meaning it selects everything that matches a condition.
The FROM statement says to select or pull the data from a specific table. The FROM statement can also be used when working with updates or deletes. Just as in our lives, sometimes we need to choose how we live, other times we need to modify some behaviors or completely remove others. Isaiah 1:16
Now on to the WHERE clause. That keyword is used to grab only the information that fits the requirement, in this case, the fruit of the Spirit.
Now when you put this all together, you produce the following results. If you select all the attributes from the Holy Spirit, you get love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. These are character traits that are attributes of believers in Christ. Just like data is useless until it is transformed and put to work, so is the life of believers. We must be transformed and put to work.
Lord God our Father in Heaven. Thank You for living inside of us. My prayer is that we all live the fruit of the spirit in our lives. May we have love for each other, live in joy, may we be at peace, practice patience, always show kindness, live with goodness in our heart, remain in faithfulness, always be gentle, and exercise self-control; as You live in us. In Jesus' name. Amen.
